Debris projects only. We refer construction, remodel, roofing and cleanout debris roll-offs, not recurring garbage service. Inside Abilene city limits the City handles regular trash, with short-term construction debris as its stated exception.

Shingle tear-off needs a container

A re-roof leaves a lot of heavy, nail-filled material in a short window. The City of Abilene's Citizens Convenience Station lists shingles as prohibited, and it will not take commercial loads, so a roofing crew cannot use it either. The City's Solid Waste page also says roofers working at a home cannot use the homeowner's curbside carts. That leaves a roll-off container as the practical way to contain a tear-off. Request it early, once you know your work date.

Weight, not just volume

Asphalt shingles are heavy. Pros commonly apply weight limits to roofing loads and may charge for overage, so give the pro the roof's square footage, the number of layers and any decking you plan to remove. Mid-size containers are common for roofs, with larger ones for multiple-layer or large homes; the pro will advise. If you are comparing a 20 yard against a 30 yard, the question is less about how many cubic yards of shingles you have and more about how many tons the container can legally and safely carry.

Do you need a permit to re-roof in Abilene?

According to the City of Abilene's building permit FAQ, a permit is required for re-roofing a house if you are replacing more than 5 squares. One square is 100 square feet, roughly three bundles of shingles. The same page says work that requires a permit and was done without one results in a Stop Work Order and an investigation fee equal to the required permit fee, with a second violation within 12 months carrying a fee ten times the permit fee. It also lists a credentialing process for contractors that includes proof of a bond of at least $75,000. A permit covers the roof; the container is a separate rental, but the permit date often drives the delivery date, so line the two up before you schedule. For permit questions, the City directs people to Building Inspections.

Hail and storm-season re-roofs

Abilene has a history of storm-driven roofing demand. A local news report put the damage from the city's June 2014 hailstorm at an estimated $400,000,000 (KTXS report). When many roofs are replaced in the same few weeks, roll-off containers and haul-off trucks get booked up. If your insurance claim is approved and your roofer gives you a start date, send us the request as soon as the date is firm. Ask your contractor whether the container is already included in the quote so you do not rent two.

Placement near the house

Place the container as close to the roof edge as the truck can reach, on a hard surface if possible, so shingles can be thrown or chuted straight in. Protect the driveway with plywood if the pro does not provide it. Check overhead wires and tree limbs for the delivery truck. If the driveway is not an option and the container has to sit on the street, see the contacts section below before delivery.

Contractor or homeowner

If a roofing company is doing the job, ask whether the container is part of their quote and who is responsible for overage charges. If you are doing the work yourself, request the dumpster for the same days as your tear-off so it is not sitting out longer than necessary, and keep a magnet sweep of the lawn and driveway on your to-do list; roofing nails get everywhere.

What not to throw in with the shingles

Batteries, tires, railroad ties and corrosive chemicals are commonly prohibited in roll-offs. Ask the pro about paint, roofing cement and other liquids, since the City's container guidance also says not to put liquids in containers. Old cans of roofing cement are better handled as household hazardous waste: the City's Environmental Recycling Center accepts items such as paints, solvents and degreasers from residents, within its container-size and labeling limits.
